We wanted to go to Robe because we had heard a lot about it being a great place for sand driving. We headed straight for the post office. Our grandmothers had both sent parcels with our Christmas presents, as we it was the first place we’d been able to suggest.
Most of our mail is faxed to us using an online fax service, so we receive it as a .pdf attachment in an email. Parcels and anything else that we actually need a hard copy of is sent Poste Restante to the a post office in a town we plan on visiting. The post office will then hold on to it for a few weeks till we get there and pick it up.
Little Dip Conservation Park
We camped at the Little Dip Conservation Park in one of their campsites. I was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t hear the ocean, but we were all pleased not to hear the mosquitoes humming outside.
We went driving through the Conservation Park the next day. Dad was more adventurous than everyone else, as usual, so when we came to a yellow sign warning of extremely soft sand ahead everyone but Dad said they didn’t want to try. We continued on and got to a cliff that everyone climbed down and walked along the beach. Later we found a firm sandy track down to the beach and drove along about 2 kilometres before it was impassable.
Later that day we came to Nora Creina, which is private property, but mostly shacks used as holiday houses so it was empty. We went through the deserted holiday community and up a hill towards the beach. There was a sign telling us it was called ‘Stinky Beach’, and it was very appropriately named. The beach was covered in seaweed, and stank to high heaven. We didn’t hang around. Family travel just doesn’t seem so appealing on a stinky beach.
We went back to the van after that. We had to head to Adelaide to drop our van off to get fixed from the incident months ago on the border on South Australia and Northern Territory, on our way to Uluru. The van was needed in Adelaide for about two weeks, and the insurance company would be contributing a fixed amount towards alternative accommodation. Problem with long-term travel is that when the accommodation needs repair … there is not an easy option to decide where to go. We have decided that we are going to go on a houseboat on the Murray, and will leave from Mildura. Once we drop the van off, we will drive straight from Adelaide to Mildura and then head off up the Murray. The Bureau of Meteorology do say that there is low level flooding on the Murray at the moment, but that should be okay in a boat.
