Swimming With Tuna

We really wanted a family activity to do on the Eyre Peninsula.  Most of the stuff we’d heard about the region was about the seafood…and although two-year-old Edmund likes tins of flavoured tuna, that’s about the only seafood we can convince any of the kids to eat.  In other words, a seafood tasting tour is not exactly high on our lists of a family activity.  So we were getting a bit concerned that the Eyre Peninsula might be a bit of a fizzler for family activities.

After a few emails, we found something that we hadn’t considered before … swimming with tuna.  The tuna were actually ones in a tuna farm.  We were worried to start off with that the tour might be cancelled, as the winds were still quite fierce, but we were lucky enough that it was still on.

I had these images of swimming with tinned fish, having cans bobbing up and down in the water.

The kids stuck their heads out the window to feel the spray of the waves on their faces.  It was lucky they were wearing bathers, because they were thoroughly drenched.  The lady laughed, “They remind me of one time that it was raining so hard that I kept the goggles on when I got out of the water just so that I could still see.”

When we got to the tuna farm, the boat was rocking so much that the step from the boat to the tuna farm wouldn’t meet.  Lucy took a big jump, but Peter and Susan accepted careful assistance from the tour operator.  They slowly walked onto the platform, that was swaying and rocking with the waves.

Down the steps we went to the underwater viewing station…feeling rather wobbly as the platform again swayed violently with another wave.

“They are so big, it’s hard to believe they’re only babies!”  Susan exclaimed to me.

Peter had a great time feeding the tuna.

The wind was 80km per hour that day! We were all blown around.

Susan decided that if her dad was in the water then she might get in, too.

Lucy was happy in the water ... only if her dad was holding her, though.

On the way home, the kids kept saying, “That was so much fun!  I loved that!”

  2. It looks like you had an amazing time! I think I’d be afraid to get in the water with the tuna though!

It was really great! It was way too cold for me to get in … I think it’d be better on a day with less wind.
